    Description

A high proportion of the migrant population in Switzerland and Europe is affected by mental disorders. Diagnostic criteria, such as those listed in the ICD-11 and DSM-5 diagnostic manuals, are cultural constructs, i.e. they were defined in a specific cultural context and are not directly applicable to other cultural groups. Cultural factors influence how psychological symptoms are perceived and evaluated, and how affected persons and their relatives react to them. There are also cultural differences in assumptions about the functioning of body and mind. Structural factors (e.g. socio-economic factors, experiences of discrimination) must also be taken into account. This seminar will address how psychological interventions can be adapted to the needs of culturally diverse groups.
