    Description

    Presence is mandatory.

This course aims to provide an overview of concepts and topics which are relevant to psychological practice with LGBTQ+ clients. There is strong empirical evidence that individuals with a sexual or gender diverse identity face cumulative stressors that can lead to mental health problems and suicidality. One possible framework for understanding these findings is the minority stress model (Meyer, 2003): Being part of a minority group is associated with experiences of prejudice and discrimination, while functional coping strategies and/or social support buffer these effects on mental health. Among this model we will discuss other theories and topics such as youth, identity, romantic relationships, and parenting. The goal is that you develop a strong scientific background for understanding health, developmental challenges, and resilience in LGBTQ+ individuals.

    Training objectives

    1) Expanding your lens of diversity: Mainstream psychology is often based on heterosexual and cisgender people
    2) Understanding the impact of prejudice and stigma for minority groups -> accumulated minority stressors
    3) Understanding the context and cohort effects of sexual and gender diversity
    4) Learning key points of affirmative psychotherapy
