The Botanical Garden becomes an institute
This new status gives the "green oasis" of Pérolles a better basis for its missions of teaching and research, plant conservation and mediation towards the general public.
From 1st January 2021, the Botanical Garden officially becomes an Institute, attached to the Faculty of Science and Medicine and directed by Prof. tit. Gregor Kozlowski. Until now, the Garden was a "platform" of the Department of Biology. The Botanical Garden welcomes this new legal status which clarifies its position and improves its visibility, both within the academic community and regarding the general public.
The usual name of the Garden will remain "Botanical Garden of the University of Fribourg". Its location (between the Natural History Museum Fribourg and the Adolphe Merkle Institute), offices, e-mail addresses, etc. remain unchanged. As for the Kozlowski research group, it continues to be part of the Department of Biology, as in the past.
Open to the public every day of the year, the Garden presents nearly 5000 species of plants in a superb 2-hectare park. The Garden continues to carry out its tasks in three domains: Science (teaching, research and conservation), Technical (horticultural maintenance and administration) and Public (communication and events). Until the autumn of 2021, it presents a large open-air exhibition: «Trésor végétal. Comment sauvegarder nos plantes menacées». Entry free!
