Le Département des sciences sociales de l’Université de Fribourg est un lieu de formation et de recherche qui a pour objectif de faire progresser la compréhension des problématiques sociales contemporaines.
Partant du constat que les disciplines des sciences sociales sont complémentaires, le Département des sciences sociales réunit trois unités – Anthropologie sociale, Science des religions et Sociologie – qui abordent le social à partir de perspectives différentes. Cette pluralité de compétences et les synergies qu’elle rend possible en fait un espace unique en Suisse, avec les points forts suivants :
Chaque unité propose un cycle de formation complet – Bachelor, Master et Doctorat – en anthropologie sociale, en science des religions ou en sociologie.
Le Département offre un programme de Master interdisciplinaire «Sociétés plurielles: cultures, politique et religions» qui combine de façon originale l’anthropologie, la science des religions et la sociologie. Il offre trois options spécifiques : Dynamiques sociales et culturelles, Anthropologie sociale, politique, technologie et Religion et société.
Les études peuvent être réalisées en français, en allemand ou de manière bilingue.
Adaptant les programmes d’études aux changements et aux défis sociaux auxquels sont confrontées les sociétés contemporaines, le Département a récemment élaboré un nouveau programme de Master intitulé «Digital Society», dont les enseignements sont majoritairement en anglais.
Couvrant un large éventail de thématiques, le Département apporte également une contribution décisive à plusieurs programmes interfacultaires ou interuniversitaires :

The Faculty of Humanities recently decided that from the fall semester 2025, the Master's study program "Digital Society" will also be offered as a major with 90 credit points (previously available only as a minor). It focuses on the social dimensions and consequences of digital technology in today's societies. In comparison to the minor program, the major will deepen the analytical and theoretical knowledge and skills and present perspectives of their practical application. Credits currently earned in the minor program can be fully recognized in the major program the following year (in case you aim to gor for the major program). Depuis plusieurs années, l’Unité d’anthropologie, et plus spécifiquement
Dr. Andrea Boscoboinik, organise des écoles d’été et des voyages d’études sur des thématiques variées, fréquentés par des étudiantes et des étudiants fribourgeois et internationaux. Ils offrent l’occasion de se familiariser avec des sujets variés et de tester des méthodologies innovantes.
En 2024, un voyage d’études portait sur la thématique Cohabitation with the Other-Than-Human Entities: Exploring Human-Wildness Interactions et s’est déroulé en Valais. Un autre voyage d'études intitulé Co-inhabiting Urban Spaces: Residential Infrastructure, Built Environment, and Communal Activism a eu lieu à Bâle. Les deux voyages d'études ont mis l’accent sur des méthodes ethnographiques multimodales.
Deeply moved by the queerphobic flag burning event that took place in Fribourg on the 17th of May 2023, a number of students from the Department of Social Sciences self-organised to orchestrate a scientific and civil response one year later under the form of the Queer Studies Week (QSW). The QSW aimed to provide the greater Fribourg public with spaces of discussion and reflections on Queer topics, through a number of public academic lectures, cultural events and expert panels between the 13th and 17th of May 2024. Key to the QSW agenda were the wishes to represent the broader domain of Queer Studies within the University of Fribourg, to invite the general Fribourg public within the University, to foster stronger ties with local Queer activist groups (who collaborated very closely on the project), and to generally invite a scientific perspective within public discourses on Queer topics.
Additionally, the project constituted itself as a most innovative pedagogical experience for the student who partook in it, being run almost entirely independently, and having allowed organisers to gain practical experience in project management; from fund sourcing, to running a significant budget, to managing a cohesive communication strategy and curating a pertinent program of fourteen cultural and scientific events. Overall, the QSW was met with great success and significant attendance!
Zu Beginn des Frühlingssemesters besuchte eine Gruppe Freiburger Studierender der Religionswissenschaft und Sozialanthropologie Kairo und Luxor. Unter der Leitung von Dr. Ricarda Stegmann und Prof. Oliver Krüger umfasste die Exkursion sowohl das Alte Ägypten als auch die koptische und islamische Kultur, die Studierenden hatten zuvor begleitende Lehrveranstaltungen besucht. Bei eiskaltem Wind begannen die Besichtigungen auf dem Gizeh-Plateau mit den drei grossen Pyramiden und Totentempeln von Cheops, Chephren und Mykerinos. Mit viel Sachkenntnis führte uns unser Reiseführer, Mostafa Dahshor, ebenso durch die Pyramiden des Djoser und Unas in Sakkara und durch die rote Pyramide und Knick-Pyramide in Dashur (3. bis 5. Dynastie, ca. 2700-2350 v.u.Z.). In Kairo konnten wir die islamische Geschichte anhand verschiedener historischer und rezenter Moscheen kennenlernen: beeindruckend war die schlichte Ibn Tulun Moschee aus der Abbasiden Zeit (8. Jhd.) ebenso wie die monumentale Moschee des Muhammad Ali auf der Zitadelle des Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi. Auch konnten wir die Al-Azhar Moschee besuchen, den Ursprungsort der gleichnamigen Universität. Ägypten ist aber auch Heimat der koptischen Christen, so dass wir das historische koptische Viertel und die Höhlenkirchen in Garbage City besuchten. Von unserem zweiten Standort in Luxor aus starteten die Exkursionen ins Tal der Könige, zum gewaltigen Totentempel der Hatschepsut und zum Hathor Tempel von Dendera. Erschöpft aber reich an Wissen und Eindrücken kehrten wir in den Schweizer Winter zurück.
