AI in Media: Risk-Based Approaches and the Future of Democracy

General public Lecture

Upon the recommendation of the Department of Communication and Media Research, the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Fribourg is awarding an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Natali Helberger, Professor of Law and Digital Technology with a special focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the University of Amsterdam (NL).
In her lecture, Prof. Natali Helberger will highlight how debates on AI in Europe are often approached from a risk-based perspective, particularly regarding the impact on fundamental rights and society, such as the use of AI in journalism. She will address the European governance approach to AI, which also focuses heavily on risk assessment and mitigation. Prof. Helberger will critically discuss the limits of this risk-based approach and demonstrate how insights from law and communication science can be integrated into AI governance. She will also raise the question of whether the use of AI in the media sector should be considered particularly high-risk.
