Learning Lab
The Learning Lab is a space for sharing, learning and experimenting dedicated to educational innovation at the University of Fribourg. Located on the second floor of the Bâtiment de Pérolles 21 (room A201), this space is open to the entire university community. Its objectives are:
- support pedagogical reflection
- technological experimentation
- interdisciplinary interaction
- to develop the digital and interdisciplinary skills of teachers and students at the University of Fribourg.
The Learning Lab provides technical and technological equipment for working, studying and teaching. It also offers a variety of activities such as interactive workshops, educational breaks on various topics related to teaching and learning, and an escape game to raise participants' awareness of IT security.
Description of the spaces
The Learning Lab consists of four areas: the Living Space and the Teaching & Learning Space, which are part of the Didactics and Digital Skills Service, and the Project Space and Fab Lab, which are managed by the Computer Science Department (DIUF).
The Living Space (A201) is freely accessible during the opening hours of the PER21 building, Monday to Friday from 7am to 10pm and Saturday from 8am to 5pm. It is closed on public holidays. Thanks to its modularity, it offers a multi-purpose environment that encourages individual or team work in a relaxed atmosphere. The aim is to create an environment that is conducive to learning and encourages relaxed interaction, far removed from the atmosphere of a traditional study room.
The Teaching & Learning Room (B205) is equipped to encourage experimentation with different teaching approaches (hybrid, co-modal, group work, etc.) and to allow for different configurations of the teaching space. It can accommodate a maximum of 24 people. It is accessible by reservation only (please consult the reservation conditions and procedure here).
The Project Space (A200) and the Fab Lab (A260) are managed by the DIUF and the “Fachschaft Informatique”. They provide an environment conducive to the development of manufacturing and prototyping projects. The Fab Lab offers rapid prototyping equipment and machines that can be accessed after a training workshop. These spaces, accessible by appointment only, provide an integrated platform for the exploration and realisation of innovative ideas, reinforcing the practical aspect of learning in the Learning Lab. Student helpdesk: students from the “Fachschaft Informatique” provide a helpdesk service for users. They are available Monday to Friday from 9am to 10am and from 1pm to 2pm.
History of the project
The DigitalSkills@UNIFR project (2019-2020) has led to the unique design of a Learning Lab at the University of Fribourg and the testing of its first applications. During the project phase, the prototype was located in the former Laboratoire d'Innovation Pédagogique (LIP) at Regina Mundi.
From 2021, as part of the continuation of the DigitalSkills@Fribourg project (2021-2024), the Department of Computer Science (DIUF) and the teaching team of the New Technologies and Teaching Centre (Centre NTE-DIT) took over the Learning Lab project. A link was then established with the Fachschaft Informatique so that students could participate in the management of the Learning Lab. From 2024, the Learning Lab Living Space (room A201) and the Teaching & Learning Space (room B205) will be attached to the University Didactics and Digital Skills Department, while the Project Space (room A200) and the Fab Lab (room 260) will be managed by the DIUF.
