Biographie
Jan Matti Dollbaum joined the University of Fribourg in August 2024 as Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics. He directs the BA programme Politics and Society and co-organizes the BA and MA programme East European Studies in Fribourg and Bern. Previously he was at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich where he continues to lead a research project on party politics in Eastern Europe.
After studies in Heidelberg, Mainz, St. Petersburg and London, Jan Matti received his PhD from Bremen University and was a guest researcher at UNC Chapel Hill. Before going to LMU Munich to lead a project financed with a grant from the Elite Network of Bavaria, he held post-doc positions at the Research Centre for East European Studies and in the working group on Social Conflict at Bremen University's Research Centre for Inequality and Social Policy.
Jan Matti studies protest and social movements as well as party strategies and voter behaviour. His research straddles democratic and authoritarian environments with a regional focus on Russia and Eastern Europe. His work has appeared in Comparative Political Studies, the European Journal of Political Research, and Perspectives on Politics, among others. Beyond academic research, Jan Matti is data curator at Discuss Data and editor of the Moldovan Analytical Digest, an English-language publication for a braod readership covering political, social and economic affairs in Moldova. The first issue is due in January 2025.
