Important: Students who wish to study English literature and linguistics are expected to have achieved a high level of English language competence in their Matura/Maturité/Maturita. We strongly recommend a level of C1 in English for students beginning their studies at the English department.
Our BA study programme covers (i) all major fields of Anglophone literature from the UK and the USA, (ii) English linguistics, and (iii) the historical forms of the English language from Beowulf to the English we use today.
By choosing our programmes, students will have an opportunity to learn about medieval women, act in plays, do experimental and field work in linguistics, study English detective fiction, discover the rich intellectual world of the English and European Renaissance, and investigate the American Western or meet contemporary American poets.
We pay close attention to writing skills and we promote an interdisciplinary approach as a key aspect of academic work. Agreements within the University of Fribourg allow our students in Linguistics to work with the nationally recognized Research Centre on Multilingualism and our students in Literature to be invited to cross-enroll in classes offered by the Institute of Comparative Literature.
The work atmosphere is stimulating and lively, as scholars of international acclaim are regularly invited to give talks both in literature and linguistics. We also have several exchange partnerships with universities in the USA (Nebraska, Mississippi and Arizona) and the UK (Lancaster and Birmingham) to encourage our students to spend a semester abroad.
