Renewal of the UNESCO Chair
The UNESCO Chair for Human Rights and Democracy at the University of Fribourg has been renewed until the end of 2028. UNESCO has once again awarded the UNESCO label to the Chair, confirming Professors Eva Maria Belser and Sarah Progin-Theuerkauf as co-holders.
With this renewal, UNESCO recognises the Chair as part of the important UNITWIN network, which includes around 1,000 universities worldwide. Through this network, higher education and research institutions around the world join forces to tackle pressing challenges and contribute to the development of their societies. In many cases, the networks and Chairs serve as laboratories of ideas and bridges between science, civil society, local communities, research and policy-makers.
The UNESCO Chair for Human Rights and Democracy at the University of Fribourg - which has been in existence since 1998 - has carried out numerous projects, particularly in the field of cultural rights. Professor Eva Maria Belser, who has held the UNESCO Chair since 2016, was joined in 2020 by Professor Sarah Progin-Theuerkauf as co-titular. The Chair's activities are carried out in close collaboration with the worldwide network of UNESCO Chairs, the Observatory of Diversity and Cultural Rights, the Institut of Federalism, the Interdisciplinary Institute of Ethics and Human Rights and many others.
