GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO ARCHAEOMETALLURGY

Archaeometallurgy is the study of the ancient metals.

- How were metals produced in the past?
- Which mines were operated?
- What kinds of objects were manufactured?

Those and many other questions on ancient technology, social organization, economic and environmental impact are the essence of the discipline. 

Metal is a very important material for mankind. Gold and silver are the standards of wealth. The copper-based alloys, e.g. bronze, firstly were used to make tools and weapons and later for coinage. After iron became available it replaced bronze for objects of everyday use, thereby improving the efficiency and reducing the costs.

For 5000 years, humans have been searching for metals. They had to dig underground galleries to extract the ore and to crush the rocks and wash the earth to concentrate the usable minerals. In infernal furnaces the metal was extracted from the ore. After the metal was obtained it had to be moulded or hammered and only then the metal was ready to be shaped into tools, weapons and furniture. From the smallest insignificant piece of construction material to delicate works of art, all these objects show the incredible amount of labour and the fascinating knowledge of our ancestors.

All these activities have left many traces like wastes (slags), products (objects) and structures (furnaces) that are revealed and recovered by the archaeologists. In order to understand the role of metals in societies of the past, these material remains are to be studied by applying techniques used in natural sciences, among which chemical analysis, measurements of physical caracteristics, mineralogical and petrographical investigations.

RESEARCH ON ANCIENT METALS

The research carried on in Fribourg cover all aspects of the metallurgical process, from mining to the manufacturing of finished objects, with a particular emphasis on the ancient metallurgy of iron. Current work is focusing on the analysis of metallurgical residues, in particular slags from ore reduction sites or from smithing workshops.

The aim is, of course, to understand the underlying technology, but also to give the archaeologists clues that could lead to a better comprehension of archaeological evidence. Besides of studies of Swiss and european material, recent research is also being developped in Mali. Another current research project is focussing on silver mining in Wallis and the provenance of silver objects from several archaeological collections.

ANCIENT IRON METALLURGY IN SWITZERLAND 

The existence of an ancient iron production first was evidenced by A. Quiquerez (1860, Jura). Other important work has been done by W. Guyan (1960’s: excavations at Bargen near Schaffhausen) and P.-L. Pelet (1970’s : excavations at Bellaires in the vaudese Jura). 1985 shows the outset of new research (Swiss Group for Iron Archaeology). We have now a general overview of the development of the iron industry in Switzerland from its beginnings. 

Iron ores were present in many parts of Switzerland. They are no more of economic interest but, in the past, mining has been an important activity.

During the first Iron Age (7th - 5th BC), iron remains very rare and is mainly used for luxury goods. Only a few pieces of smithing slags have been found. During the second Iron Age (4th - 1st BC), iron becomes more and more common, and evidences for smithing are frequent on settlements. But firm proof of mining and iron production could not yet be established for this period.

During the Roman Period (1st - mid 5th AD), iron is a very common material. Iron nails are used for building to a large extend. Smithing slags are common finds in towns, villages and rural settlements. There is some evidence for a small scale local production of iron during the later period of the roman rule.

From the 6th century onwards, the local production of iron (bloomery process) rose all over the country. During the Early Medieval Period (6th-10th AD), this industry was an important economical factor.

The needs for iron growed again after the 10th century and the medieval production followed the trend. A very important industry was established in the central Jura, around Delémont during the 13th century. In the 12th century, the new technique of the cast iron producing blast furnace is introduced.

The production was flourishing during the post-medieval period until the first half of the 19th century. Today, no iron is produced anymore but the heritage of this industrial past is still present.

IRON ORES FOUND IN SWITZERLAND 

Switzerland is divided into three parts regarding the geological basement. The Jura Ridge, builded by folded mesozoic limestones, lay in the north. 

Iron ores are present in several different sedimentary beds. The most important are oolitic layers of the Dogger. But this ore is relatively poor and has been mined only during recent periods. The siderolitic iron ore (Eocene) was more attractive for the ancient miners because it is easy to recover rich pisolitic concretions.

On the central Plateau, the sediments are very recent and do not contain any iron ore. But this is the more attractive part of the country for agriculture and most of the population settled in this area.

The Alps are high mountains with a very complicated geology. There are several small ore deposits in this area but they are more difficult to mine, but most of them have been exploited during the recent past at least.

THE IRON METALLURGY IN SWITZERLAND DURING THE ROMAN PERIOD

During the Roman Period, iron became a very common material and has been used for allmost every purpose. Weapons and tools were still made of iron and they became more and more heavy (as for example the anvils recovered at Vidy and Avenches VD). The Romans used also an incredible quantity of nails for building. The amount of iron required for the roman way of life is much more important than what has been previously assumed.

The archaeological evidences for iron working and smithing are very numerous in roman Switzerland. 

Smithing slags are found on many sites, including large towns (coloniae : Avenches VD, Augst AG/BL), small towns (Geneva GE, Martigny VS), military settlements (Vindonissa AG, Zurzach AG), villages (vici : Vidy-Lausanne VD, Baden AG, Petinesca BE, Oberwinthetur ZH), hamlets (Marsens FR, Gamsen VS, Alle JU), large agricultural estates (villae : Etagnières VD, Châbles FR, Morat FR, Biberist SO, Rödersdorf SO, Dietikon ZH, Neftenbach ZH, Seeb ZH) and even in smaller farms (Cuarny VD, Boécourt JU). 

Iron smithing was really a common activity everywhere. Several well preserved workshops have been recently excavated and studied in some details.

Surprisingly, there is no firm evidence for iron production during the 1st and 2nd century AD. There only exist few traces of a late roman production in the area of Romainmôtier VD (site of Les Bellaires - Prins Bois) and Montcherand VD. A bloomery furnace has been excavated near a roman villa in Laufen BL but the dating remains questionable. 

The possibility to find roman slag heaps near Vindonissa can not be ruled out, as for the area of the Salève mountain (near Geneva in France). Regarding the enormous quantity of iron needed by the inhabitants of Switzerland during the Roman period, it is absolutely certain that the local production never could fulfil the needs. Massive imports of iron must have been the rule. Large centres of iron production dating of the Roman age are well known in France (Montagne Noire, Burgundy etc.). Recent finds of shipwrecks filled with iron bars in southern France illustrate the importance of the roman iron trade.

THE IRON METALLURGY IN SWITZERLAND DURING THE EARLY MEDIEVAL PERIOD (MID 5TH - 10TH CENTURY AD)

After the collapse of the Roman Empire, a reorganization of the trade and industry was to take place. From the 6th century onwards, the archaeological evidences indicate the spread of the iron production all over Switzerland. Most of the bloomery furnaces and slag heaps excavated in the Canton of Vaud (Les Bellaires, Montcherand) date back to the Merovingian period. 

In the Central Jura, the oldest dated slag heaps are the same age (Boécourt, Corcelles). In the area of Schaffhausen, the trend seems to be similar. On Mont Chemin near Martigny VS in the Alps, all the dated slag heaps are Merovingian. On the Salève mountain (France) near Geneva, several sites are also dated of the same period. In both the italian Alps and the french Jura, there are evidences from this time period. 

On the other hand, the use of iron gradually decreased. Only a small number of iron objects are known from Early Medieval settlements, while numerous and wonderful weapons and belt buckles are found in graves. This demonstrates a shift in the use of iron from the Roman to the Early Medieval Period.

Archaeological evidence for blacksmithing activities is scarce but, in fact, only few settlements have been investigated. A smithing workshop has been found at Sézegnin GE. At Develier-Courtetelle JU, in the middle of the Delémont valley, a hamlet of several farmsteads has been excavated recently. Here, iron smithing was a major activity. Other sites also provide smithing slags but in smaller amounts. 

During the early Middle Ages, the production and working of iron was important in Switzerland. The many tons of reduction slags dated to this period seem to testify to a production sufficient for the needs of the local market. It may even be possible that the country started to export iron to other areas.
