A long section of serpentinized depleted mantle peridotite now published in Science


Some of the results from the IODP Exp. 399 drill cores recovered at Hole 1601C on the Atlantis Massif are now published in the journal Science. This study – with the involvement of members of our group – provides first details on the mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry and geophysics of the 1268-meter-long section of serpentinized abyssal mantle peridotite that was recovered in spring 2023 by the IODP drilling vessel Joides Resolution. Amongst others this study highlights the extensive fluid-rock interaction processes that were observed throughout the entire drill core, it provides new insights into the processes of melt flow that take place in the shallow upper mantle, and the complex interplay between tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal processes that take place during the formation of this oceanic core complex. We are excited to do much more interesting research on these unique drill cores in the coming years.
