Marcus Gastaldello

Biography

Since February 2023, I have been a doctoral student at the Department of Geosciences of the University of Fribourg. My research focuses on understanding the nature of englacial warming in high altitude areas of the Swiss Alps in response to climate change. Specifically, this involves the monitoring and modelling of cold firn – an intermediary between snow and glacial ice – around the Colle Gnifetti site of the Monta Rosa massif.

Before moving to Switzerland in 2021, I previously completed a master’s degree in mechanical engineering with a specialisation in fluid dynamics from the University of Warwick, UK. After two years employment in industry, I moved to the University of Fribourg hoping to re-orientate my career into the field of glaciology, enrolling in the master’s and then the doctorate program.
