Funding opportunities
There are various financing options for your PhD project. Funding is closely related to the nature of your employment and you should discuss this issue with your supervisor before starting your PhD.
In addition, there are the following funding options:
- As a PhD student, you might be funded by a scholarship through your doctoral supervisor, e.g. from the SNSF (projects), the EC, foundations and others.
- Overview of funding opportunities available for PhD students directly.
- Doc.CH: addresses PhD students at the beginning of their thesis.
- Doc.Mobility: adresses PhD students in the middle of their thesis.
- PostDoc.Mobility – Intended for PhD students in their last year who wish to pursue an academic career. The SNSF offers scholarships for working in research institutes abroad.
- Short-term Scholarships offered to students by the University of Fribourg.
- Funds for academic publications by the Unifr, Unifr Open Access Fund and by the SNSF.
- CSWM Funding for Continuing Education contributes financially to the enhancement of researchers' profiles (e.g. for conference participation)
The SNSF offers supplementary measures to PhD students employed through SNSF funding.
This includes:
- Gender equality grants – aims at young women researchers to support career development
- Flexibility grant – supports doctoral students with children.
Further support measures relating to mobility stays can be found here.
Temporary support in emergency situations:
In case of financial hardship, the Uni-Social office offers financial support for PhD students. This support is limited to 12 months.
Foreign PhD students who were required to prove sufficient financial means when they entered Switzerland can receive financial support from the third study semester after their entry into Switzerland.
