Co-supervision of a thesis
Do you find, at the beginning or during your doctoral studies, that the guidance and supervision by another experienced researcher could add an additional dimension to your research? Do you need access to another library or to specific research literature, or are you interested in the support of a different research team?
All of this would be possible under a collaborative agreement to conduct a cotutelle de thèse. A "Cotutelle de thèse" project or PhD partnership is based on a formalized collaboration between a Swiss and a foreign university and includes:
- a doctoral thesis carried out supervised by two PhD supervisors
- a joint defense (or similar), involving both participating universities
- the granting of two diplomas mentioning that the PhD thesis has been elaborated either in the framework of a cotutelle or within a PhD partnership
This framework includes residencies at both partner universities, additional focus on your research topic, and coordination with your supervisors. You are therefore subject to the doctoral regulations of both partner universities.
Within the framework of a Cotutelle de thèse partnership, you are entitled to apply to swissuniversities for a scholarship once a year each spring.
This scholarship serves, among other things, to cover the costs of the numerous trips that a cotutelle entails.
We would also be happy to advise you personally and provide you with further information in the run-up to such a decision. Do not hesitate to contact us!
Important note
The joint supervision of the doctoral thesis does not automatically entitle you to admission to the University of Fribourg. All future PhD students must undergo the admission procedure. Likewise, admission to the University of Fribourg does not automatically imply a commitment to dual supervision of the doctoral thesis, which must be organised independently.
