Biography

Edy Portmann is director of the Mobiliar Center for Resilience at the University of Fribourg. He is heading the Resilient Systems Group at the Human-IST Institute. After an apprenticeship in electrotechnics, he studied business informatics and got a doctorate in fuzzy logic. He worked for EY, PwC and Swisscom, and was a researcher at the Universities of Berkeley, Bern and Singapore.

  The SPICE project aims at accelerating the upscaling of Smart City (SC) solutions and the formation of a SC industry in Switzerland as a means to enhance innovation, efficiency, social welfare and quality of urban life. The core hypothesis of the proposal is that problems for scaling of SC solutions can be tackled by an integrative strategic approach, combining a user/citizen, organisational and system-level perspective. Accordingly, the project is structured into three different research streams (WP2-5) in addition to synthesis and dissemination in WP6. The first stream focuses on a human-centric design approach of SC solutions and tools to improve citizen integration and consideration of their needs. The second stream is on an organizational level with special attention to collaborative strategies at the digital-physical interface and development and evaluation of SC business models. The third research stream focuses on the system level, entailing an analysis of key driving forces and barriers and a subsequent strategy for the formation of an integrative SC sector. The project’s setup is both inter- and transdisciplinary, allowing the executing consortium to draw from its complementary competencies in transition research (ZHAW), strategic management (ETH), business model research (HSG), and informatics (UniFR). All findings will be further validated in applied settings involving practice-partners. The project addresses a large number of topics, which are listed under modules 2 and 3 of the NRP 77 call.

  Soft Computing - Approximate Reasoning Method for the Semantic Web

  Today's Web search engines are mostly limited to keyword search and by now there is no engine capable of understanding and processing natural language or at least suggest users related linguistic terms during search. Through recently evolution in social Web technologies in respect of easy to handle tools on the other side, more and more users bustle in today's Social Web. Most of these users are not or only limitedly able to word their search needs through precise queries to exert Semantic Web full potential for example. Classical logical systems such as propositional logic, predicate logic and modal logic, as well as AI-based techniques for natural language processing and knowledge representation, interaction, and reasoning are concerned in a fundamental way with propositions expressed in a natural language. Unlike classical logical approach, soft computing is among other things based on fuzzy logic and provides an expressive language for knowledge representation, interaction, and reasoning. Fuzzy logic provides a mathematical power for the emulation of the higher order cognitive functions, the thought and perception. Considering that the fuzziness is ubiquitous and essential for the human beings, fuzzy systems offers new perspectives for improving the human-machine interactions. The proposed approach attempts to establish new interactive knowledge representation and reasoning techniques. For example, visualized interactive maps such as topic maps, cognitive maps, mind maps, etc. can help to find similar linguistic terms clustered around a topic. The inclusion of soft computing techniques to knowledge representation, interaction, and reasoning offers new ways for human-computer interaction that are not yet explored, as for example paraconsistent reasoning. In addition, a representation as map has the advantage that humans can interact with such a system in a natural way. The interactive visualization of these maps is a first step solely established for augmented user understanding but in future these maps ought to be enhanced to knowledge bases for machines to reason on users' vague natural language expressions too. Following a design science research approach, several research methods will be applied during the post-doc research stay: literature review, argumentative-deductive analysis, grounded theory, structured interviews and case studies, test installations, and controlled experiments. Based on simulations with a prototype the differences, advantages and problems of approximate reasoning in the Social Semantic Web should be determined.

  Due to information overload, it is important to know how to extract relevant information. This leads to the question: how can relevant information be found? The problem with representing documents and queries through sets of keywords is that they yield results which are only partially relevant to their actual semantic contents. As a consequence, the matching of a document to the query terms is vague. This can be clarified by considering that every query expression defines a fuzzy set and that each document has a degree of relationship in this set. To search for information from weblogs, a user types search terms and related relevance (user need) in an interface. This user need will be sent to the query engine. The query engine generates a search query and sends it to a meta search engine. The meta search engine then sends user requests to numerous other search engines and aggregates the results into a single list. The idea behind this is to bring these components together and create a search engine for weblogs with the use of fuzzy methods to search for related documents.
