Climate Change Litigation before the European Court of Human Rights


The first climate cases are pending before the Grand Chamber of the ECtHR. The cases raise fundamental questions about the role of the courts in combating the effects of climate change. The ECtHR is at a crossroads where it must define its own role as a guardian of human rights in the threat posed by global warming.

Prof. Dr hc Helen Keller is Professor of International Law, European Law and Public Law at the University of Zurich. From 2011 until the end of 2020, she worked as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. In 2018, the Faculty of Law of the University of Fribourg awarded her an Honorary Doctorate for her remarkable academic record and outstanding contributions to linking research and practice in the field of human rights.
