Application Process

Requirements : you are enrolled at the University of Fribourg at least from September to June of the next year (two semesters). You are fluent in English. Exchange students are welcome to participate in the Vis Moot.

The 33d Vis Moot will start in October 2025 and finish in April 2026. We are looking forward to finding motivated candidates for the Vis Moot team 2025/2026.

Applications shall include: (1) Motivation Letter, (2) CV, (3) transcripts of grades (college & University grades) and (4) a short written assignment, see instruction below:

  • Prepare a short Memorandum (the main text on 2-7 pages, plus a list of sources), in which you defend one of the following positions mentioned on p. 50 para. 1 (you can choose freely among the four options below):

       1) The Tribunal should find that it has jurisdiction and the claim is admissible, despite the fact that the Parties did not attempt to resolve the dispute by mediation (Claimant’s position, question 1).

       2) The Tribunal should find that it has NO jurisdiction or, in the alternative, that the claim is inadmissible, because the Parties had to first have recourse to mediation (Respondent’s position, question 1).

       3) The UN Vienna Convention on the International Sale of Goods (CISG) does apply to the Agreement, because the conditions for its application under Art. 1-6 CISG are met (Claimant’s position, question 3).

       4) The UN Vienna Convention on the International Sale of Goods (CISG) does NOT apply to the Agreement, because the conditions for its application under Art. 1-6 CISG are NOT met (Respondent’s position, question 3).

  • No prior knowledge in the field of arbitration or CISG is required: you might only need to do some legal research online and in the library to perform this assignment. You can find examples of how a memorandum should look like here (in the section “Best Memorandum for Claimant” and “Best Memorandum for Respondent”): https://www.vismoot.org/previous-moots/30th-vis-moot/

The applications should be sent by 31 May 2025 to the following two addressees in one email: (1) Christiana Fountoulakis christiana.fountoulakis@unifr.ch (Supervisor of Vis Moot) and (2) Vera Bykova vera.bykova@mids.ch (Coach of the Team). Please note that applications must be submitted in English.

The Information Event will be organized in the second half of April, at which you could meet the current Team and ask all the questions. For any additional questions, you can contact us via vismootfribourg@gmail.com
