Moving to Fribourg
Swiss entry visa and permits
Studying in Switzerland offers transformative academic and personal experiences. However, for non-Swiss nationals, knowing the required authorizations to be obtained and how to do this can be complex.
To live and study in Fribourg there are 3 key criteria to be aware of and understand if they apply to you:
- Entry visa
- Residence permit
- Registering with the local authorities (Commune)
To help you navigate the process for all requirements relating to immigration (both EU/EFTA and non-EU/EFTA), please consult the IBL Guide – Immigration Process to Live in Fribourg, which explains what you need to do and when to obtain an entry visa and residence permit for studying in Switzerland.
For students requiring an entry visa to study in person, the application process is long and varies depending on the country - plan for a minimum of 4-5 months. Students should ensure their start date aligns with their visa issuance date to facilitate timely entry into Switzerland.
The responsible authority for obtaining residence in Fribourg is the Service of Immigration (SPoMi). Please note:
- It is strongly advised to always make an appointment, do not just turn up at the immigration office window.
- Refrain from contacting the SPoMi once your application is submitted - this will only delay processing times.
- The SPoMi does not issue certificates stating that an application is in progress.
- The SPoMi is only responsible for foreign nationals living in the canton of Fribourg. If a student does not live or intend to live in the canton of Fribourg, students must contact the relevant cantonal authority directly.
Finding somewhere to live

- Student accommodation
Pros: renting may be easier (less administrative work, flexible renting contracts) / food may be included / contact with other students / typically is well located for the university campus.
Cons: Bathroom and kitchen may be shared.
Price: Although may be cheaper than a private apartment, there might not be a significant difference.
