Das Mittelalter war eine konfliktreiche Zeit, aber auch eine Zeit voller Interaktionen zwischen den verschiedenen Kulturen des Mittelmeerraums. Dieser Kurs zielt darauf ab, die Dynamiken zu veranschaulichen, durch welche die Künste von Byzanz, dem Islam und Lateineuropa aufeinander trafen und gegenseitig Ideen, Formen und Objekte austauschten. Er wird insbesondere die Bedeutung dieses Austauschs im islamischen Andalusien, im normannischen Sizilien und in Palästina unter der Herrschaft der Kreuzfahrer und später der Ayyubiden zwischen dem 11. und dem 13. Jahrhundert unterstreichen.

Die Analyse der spezifischen Kontexte Andalusiens, Siziliens und Palästinas wird eine gründliche Kenntnis der verschiedenen Ausdrucksformen ermöglichen, die dort aufeinander trafen: die Kunst des islamischen Maghreb und des christlichen Spaniens, die Traditionen Nordeuropas, Süditaliens, der Mittelmeerländer unter byzantinischer und lateinischer Herrschaft und der islamischen und christlichen Kulturen des Nahen Ostens.
