State contribuions for churches
On February 3rd 2025, the Zurich Cantonal Council granted the recognized religious communities a total framework credit of 300 million. The amount is to extend from 2026 to 2031 and will be used by the religious communities for various activities of importance to society as a whole.
Both the Catholic and Reformed communities intend to make one million each year available for various projects of non-recognized religious communities. Among others, the Association of Islamic Organizations in Zurich and the Association of Orthodox Christians would benefit from this support.
This means that non-recognized religious communities will receive a total of 12 million, which has met with criticism, particularly from members of the SVP, EDU and FDP. The churches should have to use the state contributions for their own projects and could not simply transfer them to other religious communities. The SP, Center Party and the Greens, on the other hand, say that the use of these funds contributes to interfaith dialogue and therefore also has a positive effect on the coexistence of religious communities.
