Nouveaux cours d'anglais au Cerle

In response to ongoing demand the English unit at CERLE has expanded and added five new Academic English courses for the 2006-2007 academic year. The courses are designed to fit with the academic and professional needs of students and can be taken for two or three ECTS credits. They are semester long courses and students will have the opportunity to take them in the winter and/or summer semesters.

We are excited about being able to offer these new courses because it means we can serve a larger portion of the university community. Two new faculty members will be leading the courses. The new teachers are Canadian and bring with them their own special commitment to promoting the multilingual environment at the University of Fribourg.  CERLE is pleased to welcome Dr. Holli Schauber and Tisa Retfalvi-Shar. Dr. Schauber is chairing our curriculum development work for these courses and in the long term we hope to develop further Academic English courses.

Both new faculty specialize in English for specific purposes.  Dr. Schauber's teaching and research are conducted as related activities drawing on classroom practices and the marketplace to inform teaching, learning and assessment.  Tisa Retfalvi-Shar"s research explores vocabulary learning and teaching.

We are pleased to announce the following new courses. Academic English Workshop geared to students at the lower levels (B1-B2) and Advanced Academic English-special projects at the upper level (C1).  Please note that neither of these courses is suitable for beginners.

Academic English Workshop is designed to help students explore and strengthen the different academic skills required for effective oral and written communication across the disciplines.  In this course students will have guided opportunities to practice the language and develop their academic skills in English.

Advanced Academic English-special projects is intended for students with a high proficiency level who need to focus on developing the skills required for successful professional oral and written communication beyond the university.

Students interested in either of these courses must take a placement test at CERLE in room 2.111 on October 26th and 27th.  Students will have the opportunity to meet and speak with the new faculty as part of the evaluation process.
