A new volume in the Bulgakov Edition has been published!

‘Die Weisheit Gottes. Sophiologie im Überblick’ (The Wisdom of God. An Outline of Sophiology) is the title of the introduction that Sergij Bulgakov published in English in 1937 in order to make his way of thinking accessible to a Western audience. At the “Bulgakov Research Centre” at the University of Fribourg, the text has been critically edited and scientifically annotated in German for the first time. The Russian text basis compiled for this purpose will follow as an open-access edition.

Bulgakov's theological approach of ‘sophiology’ is based on the confession of Christ by the Council of Chalcedon (451) and expands the doctrine of the God-man, i.e. the unity of divine and human nature in Jesus Christ, to the goal of unification between creator and the whole of creation. Here, the author sees at the same time the ecumenical key to the restoration of Christian unity: Sophiology founds a special ‘understanding of all Christian teachings and dogmas, from the Trinity and the Incarnation to the present-day questions of practical Christianity’ that unites Christianity.
