Luggage screening
Screening passenger baggage at airports represents a demanding task with critical implications for aviation security due to the current geopolitical situation (e.g. terrorist threats). To increase performance and decrease workload of screening officers, we will examine work design in the domain of visual inspection. We focus on three aspects that can influence performance and workload of screening officers:
- Technology: availability of automated support systems (which detect potential prohibited items) and their characteristics (e.g. design, reliability, ability, static vs. moving images)
- Work-rest schedules: rest breaks and night work
- Environmental stressors: unscheduled interruptions and time pressure (e.g. due to long passenger queues) The work may also be relevant to other domains of visual inspection (e.g. medical imaging, quality control in manufacturing).
