Pictorial Usability Scales
This research topic investigates the use of pictorial scales within the context of the evaluation of interactive products. Such scales represent a visually-based alternative to the vast majority of verbal scales that are available for this usability evaluation. The research focus relies on two aspects: the development of suitable and comprehensible scales and their validation with regard to psychometric properties (validity, reliability, sensitivity).
The pictorial nature of these scales provides a couple of advantages over verbal scales, such as an easier access to the intention of a question/statement, and increased motivation while filling in such scales.
Future research in this topic may focus on the development process of pictorial scales, working towards guidelines for an efficient scale development and validation, but also on the usefulness of new variations of pictorial scales using animations.
