Fribourg Institute for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies
The Fribourg Institute for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies is an interdisciplinary and bilingual institute of the Faculty of Humanities, which emerged from the collaboration of experts from different disciplines (history, philosophy, literature, theology, musicology and art history). It is committed to interdisciplinary cooperation within the University of Fribourg and to international partnerships at the European and global level in order to promote research on the Renaissance.
The institute is dedicated to the various historical developments in culture, theology, natural sciences and politics in the period from 1450 to 1800. It is characterised by the combination of different competences that are present at the University of Fribourg. It also fosters an interdisciplinary dynamic that is distinctive of the Faculty of Arts and to which scholars from other faculties also contribute.
The institute promotes the training of Master's students, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in the field of Renaissance Studies by organising scholarly events such as conferences, colloquia and workshops. It initiates and coordinates scientific and didactic exchange programmes and supports members in acquiring third-party funding. In addition, it seeks contact with a broader public beyond the academic world, for example in the form of public events and the book series Pluma levat with Schwabe.
