Unlocking Innovation: Insights into Innosuisse Grant Writing

Dr. Lukas Schertel, CEO and co-founder of Seprify, a spin-off of the University of Fribourg, shared valuable insights on strengthening Innosuisse grant applications at an event organized by the Knowledge and Technology Transfer. Discover how Traction, Patents, and Market Impact can help turn ideas into success.

On December 12, 2024, Dr. Lukas Schertel, CEO and co-founder of Seprify, a deep-tech spin-out of the University of Fribourg and University of Cambridge, shared valuable insights into Innosuisse grant writing with Unifr researchers. Seprify, which uses cellulose white pigments to replace harming TiO2 nanoparticles in food, cosmetics, and other industries, has been successfully funded twice through Innosuisse.

The event, organized by the Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT), provided a deeper understanding of how Innosuisse supports innovative projects with commercial potential, whether developed independently or in collaboration with industry partners. Dr. Schertel shared lessons learned from his own Innosuisse grant applications, highlighting key elements for success: TRACTION, such as securing letters of support from industry partners; PATENTS, which should be strategically planned with KTT to protect intellectual property; and IMPACT, especially in understanding the market opportunity using tools like Frost and Sullivan database available to Unifr researchers for analysis and benchmarking. He also emphasized the importance of clear project planning with defined "go/no-go" decision points. He reassured attendees that Innosuisse applications can be re-submitted, even if previous attempts were unsuccessful.

For researchers interested in applying for Innosuisse grants, the KTT office provides tailored advice, a comprehensive application package, including interactive tools, focused FAQs, and access to market insights. Presentation slides and full resources are available by contacting the KTT at techtransfer@unifr.ch or calling +41 26 300 65 00.
