UNIFR Open Science Week 2021

The last Open Science Week took place from Monday 22 November - Friday 26 Novembre 2021

The Open Science Week 2021 of the University of Fribourg was dedicated to the practical aspects of Open Science. In seven different workshops, participants had the opportunity to deal with diverse aspects of Open Science: copyright in the context of Open Science, scientific IT services in Open Science, Gold Open Access publishing, Green Open Access with FOLIA, research data management with OLOS, managing sensitive research data, Open Educational Resources.

Workshops

  • Monday 22 November 12:15 - Copyright in the Context of Open Science (online)

Copyright in the Context of Open Science (english)

Whether Open Access, Open Data, or Open Educational Resources: In all areas of Open Science, basic knowledge of copyright law is essential. The workshop will introduce participants through practical exercices to the basics of copyright law and the alternative of Creative Commons, which has established itself as a kind of exchange currency in the context of Open Science.
The workshop will take place online, and participants will work on specific cases in breakout rooms. Before participating, check that your microphone and camera are working.

  • Tuesday 23 November 12:15 - Gold Open Access Publishing at the University of Fribourg (hybrid)

Gold Open Access Publishing at the University of Fribourg (english)

Publishing a work in Gold Open Access has advantages: The publication is available online immediately, without delay or embargo period. The disadvantage: The publication is often subject to charges (Article Processing Charges - APC). The workshop will outline how to find a suitable Gold Open Access journal and how to recognize predatory publishers. Funding opportunities through the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Open Access Publication Support Fund will also be covered. Possible alternatives are the Read & Publish agreements that the University has signed with certain publishers, or publishing in a Diamond Open Access journal that does not request any APC. From the beginning of November, the University of Fribourg will have a platform that will allow the publication of such journals by researchers themselves (scholar-led publishing).

  • Wednesday 24 November 12:15 - The Green Road of Open Access (hybrid)

The Green Road of Open Access: Archiving of own Publications at the University of Fribourg (french with german slides)

Switzerland's national open access strategy has set the goal that 100% of scientific publications based on publicly funded research should be available in open access by 2024 at the latest. The Green Road of Open Access, which involves making one's own publications available via an institutional repository, represents a key pillar in achieving this goal. In addition, the Open Access policy of the University of Fribourg requires, as of recently, "the deposit of a digital copy of the full text and the corresponding metadata in the institutional repository".
The presentation is divided into two distinct parts. The first part discusses the theoretical aspects of Green Open Access (legal basis, publishers' policies, licenses for re-use of publications, manuscript versions). The second part will address the practical aspects of depositing on the institutional repository (RERO DOC / FOLIA) with a demonstration and questions from the audience.

  • Wednesday 24 November 13:15 - Scientific IT Services in Open Science (hybrid)

Scientific IT Services in Open Science (french with english slides)

    Scientific IT presents two services:

    • Management and protection of sensitive and personal data with REDcap
REDCap, or Research Electronic Data Capture, is a secure web application developed by Vanderbilt University for the collection of sensitive or personal data especially in the context of clinical trials. The REDCap community is organized as a consortium of (mostly academic) institutions that have signed a agreement with Vanderbilt University. Through the Department of IT Services, the University of Fribourg is a member of this consortium. Use of REDCap is free for consortium members, and support is provided through a collaborative network. REDCap complies with the strictest requirements of ethics committees, making REDCap a preferred platform for research data collection.
    • Renku is a web platform developed by the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC, a joint project of ETHZ and EPFL). Renku allows collaborative management of computer code and the execution environment. Various interfaces such as JupyterLab or RStudio are available to users directly in the browser. Renku also simplifies reproducibility by recording every step of the data analysis. Thanks to the integrated version control system, calculations can be easily reproduced and checked. At present, Renku@UniFR is only available for teaching as part of the DigitalSkills@Fribourg program.

  • Thursday 25. November 12:15 - Research Data Managment with OLOS (hybrid)

Research Data Managment with OLOS (french with english slides)

OLOS is a national platform for managing, sharing, and archiving research data. OLOS complies with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) as well as with Swiss legislation and European regulations. The University of Fribourg is a founding member of the OLOS association, and its researchers can use the platform to deposit their research data.

The workshop gives an overview of the features of OLOS and explains the registration procedure for using the platform.

    • Lydie Echernier (Université de Genève)

  • Thursday 25 November 13:15 - Open Data and management of sensitive research data (hybrid)

Open Data and Management of Sensitive Research Data (english)

Data management involves many legal fields. In the academic world, everybody has to manage different data. These data, depending on the field of research and the partners involved, are often covered by confidentiality clauses, professional secrecy, functional privacy, data protection, patent law...

To understand the general legal context and to apply the organisational and technical measures key skills are needed.

The question is… what is your role and where to start?

The workshop introduces the topic by presenting key examples from three different disciplines.

  • Friday 26 November 12:15 - Open Educational Resources - an Introduction (online)

Open Educational Resources – an Introduction (english)

Open educational resources (OER) are regarded as having great potential in the area of higher education. They can support new methodological-didactic approaches, help to develop standardised and rapidly changing e-learning materials collaboratively and support the individual learning processes of students.

This session will give an introduction to OER and present examples of best practices of OER in higher education. In the workshop section we want to answer questions on OER and discuss opportunities and hurdles of using and publishing OER at Swiss universities.

This is an open workshop in English language – for novices as well as experts in the field of OER in higher education.
