Inauguration of the Interfaculty Food Research and Innovation Center (FRIC)
The new Interfaculty Food Research & Innovation Center (FRIC) was created in 2023 under the impulse of a working group led by Professor Stefan Salentinig. All faculties at the University of Fribourg are involved in this unique initiative. The Center, led by a directorate of six professors from different faculties, officially began its operations on January 1, 2024. Dr. Nadine Lacroix, a specialist in food science, is coordinating the Center's activities. The official inauguration will take place on October 2, 2024.
The Center adopts an innovative, interdisciplinary approach that covers the entire food chain from production to the consumer, with a special focus on sustainability and consumer needs. Four interconnected research clusters address topics such as food production, food processing, consumer behavior and marketing, as well as the impact of nutrition on physical and mental health. In addition to natural and medical sciences, disciplines such as psychology, law, communication and marketing, ethics, theology, and education also play a central role.
Diverse Activities and Collaborations
The Center primarily focuses on academic basic research but also considers societal and industrial issues. Collaborations with national and international companies and research institutions in the food sector are already in place. In addition to internationally competitive research, visible through publications and international conference contributions, the center offers education in the field of food sciences. This includes various initiatives such as a specialized doctoral program, and modules for master's programs that are currently being developed. The Center's broad interdisciplinary knowledge provides unique continuing education opportunities with direct research relevance. Furthermore, patent applications, publications, and the establishment of start-ups are planned, and some are already underway.
The proximity to Agroscope and the Competence Center of the Canton of Freiburg for education, advisory services, and enforcement in the field of agriculture in Grangeneuve offers excellent opportunities to test applied research and develop prototypes.
Regional Integration, National and International Impact
The new Center will significantly strengthen the cantonal food strategy in scientific, political, and economic terms. In collaboration with Agroscope and Grangeneuve, it positions Freiburg as a leading canton in the field of food sciences with international influence. An advisory board, comprising representatives from academia, politics, and industry, ensures strong local integration and supports the center's international networking and communication. Together with the City of Freiburg, the Center has already contributed successfully to the city's entry into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in the «Gastronomy» category.
With this newly established Center, the University of Freiburg is setting an important course for the future of food sciences and making a significant contribution to sustainable development in this field.
