Dr. honoris Causa
Each year, the Faculty of Science and Medicine can grant an honorary doctorate (Doctor honoris Causa) to a person for their particular achievements in the fields of Science and Medicine.
The Dr. h. C are distributed each year at the Dies Academicus in November.
-
2023 - Dr. Luca Vetterli
The Faculty of Science and Medicine confered the title of Dr. h.c. to Dr Luca Vetterli:
- for his rigorous scientific contribution to the creation of an exhaustive inventory of wetlands in Switzerland and his fight for the protection of marshes in Switzerland;
- for his expertise in supporting major hydroelectric projects, whilst ensuring the protection of water and nature
- for his tireless scientific and political commitment to protecting the environment and biodiversity.
-
2022 - Prof. Dr. Federica Sallusto
The Faculty of Science and Medicine confered the title of Dr. h.c. to Prof. Federica Sallusto
- For her pioneering studies characterising the metrics, specificity and organisation of the human immune response to various classes of natural antigens and vaccines;
- For the discovery of the heterogeneity of the T cell response and the definition of the different subsets of memory T cells and their physiological and pathological implications;
- For her contribution to the advancement of research and teaching in medical immunology in Switzerland with world-class recognition and visibility.
-
2021 - Prof. Dr. Susan M. Gasser
The Faculty of Science and Medicine confered the title of Dr. h.c. to Prof. Susan Margaret Gasser:
- For her professional career as the world's leading epigeneticist, which is exemplary and groundbreaking for young Swiss researchers;
- For her visionary commitment to encouraging excellent women and men to realise their potential in research and academia;
- For the impetus given in gender equality commissions and initiation of funding instruments aimed at outstanding female scientists and enabling women to reconcile family and academic career.
-
2020 - Prof. Dr. Kevin J. Tracey
The Faculty of Science and Medicine confered the title of Dr. h.c. to Prof. Kevin J. Tracey:
- For his unique and tireless research work in the field of inflammation, uncovering its basic molecular mechanisms of disease and identifying new therapeutic targets in inflammation and life-threatening diseases. Among other things, Professor Tracey has discovered the pathophysiological role of TNF-alpha and HMGB-1 in septic shock and developed new experimental therapeutic approaches that target these mediators.
- For his pioneering work and expansion of a new field of science called Bioelectric Medicine and for implementing the discoveries he has made in this field. Among other things, Professor Tracey has described new mechanisms of how the autonomic nervous system and the immune system interact, and designed and clinically tested novel innovative therapeutic devices to stimulate the vagus nerve
- For creating new research infrastructures, which enabled him to establish and expand a new state-of-the-art biomedical research institute: This allowed him, on the one hand, to recruit leading researchers, and on the other hand, to train many generations of young scientists in the field of molecular medicine.
-
2019 - Prof. Paul Julian Weindling
-
2018 - Prof. Lloyd Nick Trefethen
The Faculty of Science and Medicine confered the title of Dr. h.c. to Prof. Lloyd Nick Trefethen:
- For his mathematical advances, among others in approximation and linear algebra
linear algebra, in particular for the study of what he called the pseudospectrum of matrices; - For the exceptional quality of his books and articles;
- For the way in which he has nourished scientific discussion, both in
in mathematics as well as in other sciences.
- For his mathematical advances, among others in approximation and linear algebra
