    Description

This course is designed to teach the basics of ethnographic research as a core method of social and cultural anthropology. The course will first provide an overview of the history as well as theoretical foundations of ethnography. In this context, critical perspectives on research practice and ethics will be developed simultaneously. As the course progresses, students will independently plan and complete small research projects. This can be done individually or in group work. A variety of ethnographic approaches will be applied, ranging from classical participant observation, audio-visual documentation, and interviewing techniques to methods of object research, sensory anthropology and digital ethnography.

    Evaluation

Successful completion of the course requires regular attendance, reading of course literature, completion of a small research project, and active participation in discussions. In addition, the research projects must be presented. Special attention should be given to reflecting on one's own strengths and difficulties in the processes of planning, implementation, and evaluation of results.
