    Description

    Thirty-five years after his death, the French philosopher Michel Foucault remains one of the most quoted authors in the Humanities and in literary studies as well as a key reference in the thought of political activists around the world. To grasp the stakes of his critique, often reduced to a set of slogans, of the relationship between knowledge and power, of Western modernity, our representations of the body, and from his early works onwards, literature, it is helpful to retrace its history which is also the story of the reception of “French Theory” from the 60s and 70s, especially in the United States –  a philosophical and political movement which will have placed literature at the heart of the questions of its time.

    This seminar will be dedicated to a close reading of Foucault’s texts on literature in their critical and historical context as well as their reception which continues to inform contemporary thought. All reading material will be available (in English, French and German) on the seminar’s Moodle page at the beginning of the semester.
