    Description

    The Illustrated Gospel Book from the Mediterranean to the Caucasus

    The Gospel manuscripts were the most frequently copied and illustrated books in medieval Christianity. Mainly focusing on Eastern Mediterranean and South Caucasian traditions, this course will offer an introduction to medieval illustrated Gospel codices and will tackle iconographic, symbolic, and functional aspects of Gospel illustrations. We will make use of traditional iconographic and comparative approaches and theological exegetical texts in order to understand the role of ornamental and figurative imagery found within the Gospel manuscripts.

    The reading and viewing conditions, as well as the liturgical and performative contexts will also be considered, allowing us to appreciate the utmost importance that medieval worshippers ascribed to the Gospel book as a holy object. The course will conclude with the present-day worship practices of medieval Gospel codices, as witnessed in the South Caucasian Republics of Armenia and Georgia.
