    Description

The Jura has an extraordinary artistic and architectural heritage that is still little known. Within this heritage, a special place is given to monuments from the medieval period, which will be examined in this seminar from an art-historical perspective, with a detailed analysis of their architecture and decoration, with reference to an analysis of their stylistic, iconographic, structural and functional aspects.

    Training objectives

Students will be invited to carry out independent research on one of the medieval monuments in the Jura. This work will consist of collecting the available bibliography, a precise description of the monument and an analysis of its main characteristics: the historical data conveyed by the available sources (texts, inscriptions, material evidence), the specific features of the architectural style, the structuring of the spaces, the types of decoration used, the images present with their stylistic and iconographic characteristics. The results of the individual work will be presented in an oral presentation, discussed in class with the other students and developed, also on the basis of the observations made during the debate, in the final written work. Fieldwork is also planned, with site visits to be defined during the course. The written work will consist of an encyclopaedic record, which will be published in the Dictionnaire historique du Jura.
