Finding Accomodation

The city of Fribourg is relatively small and Unifr does not have a traditional campus; it is spread out across the whole city. This situation offers you a lot of freedom when it comes to choosing the neighborhood in which you would like to live.

If urban life is not for you, consider settling in a neighboring town; the public transportation system is safe and reliable, and it is a bike-friendly area.

If you want to rent an apartment, you should know that most apartments are unfurnished, but if you are willing to sublet a place, you may find a furnished apartment for a limited period of time (they are often offered by locals who leave the country for a while).

Keep in mind that the number of rooms advertised only includes the bedrooms and living room (bathrooms are omitted in the count / kitchens count as a ½ room when they are closed and are omitted when they open to the living room). Here are a few examples to help you understand the system:

  • A 2½-room apartment contains 1 bedroom, 1 living room, a closed kitchen, and bathroom(s).
  • A 4-room apartment contains 3 bedrooms, 1 living room, a kitchen opened to the living room, and bathroom(s).

For a rough idea of how much rent costs, see (link to budget). Keep in mind that it is recommended for your rent to constitute no more than a quarter of your monthly income.

PhD students can apply for student residences.
